My first sighting of these fantastic new wooden baits was at the Ft. Lauderdale Shallow Water Show in 1996. I was amazed at the colors and finishes, and even more amazed when I used these baits for myself. I have been using the Rip Roller quite often, which is a rear propeller surface bait, and have been catching snook, reds, trout, and tarpon on the 3.25 size. Yes tarpon, the finish holds up as well as the plastic baits and they outfish them 2 to 1. The balance and flotation of the baits is the difference from what I have experienced on the water, and at the cleaning table. Do you remember the old wooden baits of the past? These baits were responsible for making some of the best guides in the world legendary with the help and availability of this type of bait. Most of the old baits are no longer available, but this is where High Rollers have found a way to scratch an itch that has been driving fisherman crazy for years. The combination of today’s technology in hooks, finish coatings and the unmatched quality of the bait is a definite winner The Crank Roller has the old world steel lip and has a slow wiggle that has tarpon, snook and redfish waiting in line for lunch. When you stop the retrieve and pause to let the bait slowly rise toward the surface, the strikes that follow are explosive. The Pop Roller is a traditional popper with all of the old world traits like all of the colors it is available in and of course the buoyancy of the lure itself. High-tech Gamakatsu hooks (not shown), two part epoxy final coatings and custom lacquer painting is the recipe to this top quality hand made wooden bait. The Original High Roller is a “walk the dog” style bait and is very effective indeed. Again the solid wood body and unique shape and flotation, adds to the action of the lure. You can look at their array of styles and colors at the web site www.hroller.com I have been fishing these baits for over five years know and have found them to be one of the very best surface lures in my arsenal. Fishing the Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Tournament with my wife Julie, the big snook and redfish were taken on the Rip-Roller and High Roller. Using these baits have resulted in a second place finish for Top Female Angler, two consecutive years running. Ask for them by name at your favorite tackle shop and make sure you tell them Capt. Dave sent you. |
